Ares

Thrust vector controlled rocket. Closed-loop stabilization on unstable flight hardware.

Ares rocket on the launch pad

Category: Controls / Embedded Systems / Aerospace

Timeline: February 2022 - March 2024

Status: Completed, iterated through multiple flight tests

Problem: Model rockets are inherently unstable when actively controlled. Stability during powered flight requires fast sensing, robust estimation, and reliable control under changing dynamics.

My role: Designed and implemented the controller (initial PD, moving toward more advanced methods), wrote embedded flight software on Teensy 4.1, integrated BNO055 + DPS310 sensors, designed TVC actuation, built PCB/wiring/structure, and ran simulation-to-real testing.

Results: Achieved stable controlled ascent with TVC and characterized instability behavior at burnout transitions.
